Resort Amenities

Disney Hilton Head opened on March 1, 1996. The resort was modeled after a 1940s hunting and fishing lodge and the entire property has a rustic feel. It is part of the Disney Vacation Club system but you don’t have to belong to that club to book one of the 123 rooms. The resort feels very much like a Disney property from the topiary Mickey Mouse at the entrance to the popular Mickey Mouse ice cream bars at the snack bar. You can buy Disney merchandise at the gift shop. Some of it is specific to Disney Hilton Head.

There is no sit-down restaurant at this resort. Tide Me Over is a walk-up window serving light breakfasts and lunches. The popular Disney refillable mug is available at Hilton Head.

There are plenty of activities at the resort. The Big Dipper is a 72,000-gallon swimming pool with a slide. There is also a splash area for toddlers. There is a playground, horseshoe courts, basketball court, table tennis and shuffleboard. Guests can rent bikes and borrow safety helmets and locks. There is fishing and crabbing gear for rent as well as beach chairs. The staff also offers up daily activities that may include things like kayaking, geocaching and story time.

The Beach

Hilton Head is a 42-square foot barrier island in South Carolina located about 8 miles north of the Georgia border. The terrain is very green and lush and there are 12 miles of beaches. The main portion of the property at Disney Hilton Head however, is not located on one of those beaches. It is a 1.3-mile trip from the main lodge to the water. Shuttles run regularly and a bike path is also available so that guests can access the beach. There is also limited parking for resort guests close to the beach. Disney built The Beach House on its 3.5 acres of oceanfront property as an anchor for guests while they are spending time seas-side.The Beach House amenities include a heated pool and splash area as well as to restrooms, showers and changing rooms and a lounge with television and game tables.

There are only quick-serve food options at The Beach House. Signals is open from April to October for lunch and ice cream and Surfmen’s Sand Bar serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages Monday through Saturday.

What About the Beach Being a Mile Away?

Guests who aren’t looking for an oceanfront view or don’t mind making the one-mile trip aren’t concerned that Disney’s Hilton Head isn’t right on the water. While it can be an inconvenience to enjoy the beach and not be near your room, the resort’s inland location puts it within walking distance of shops and restaurants whenever guests are at the main property. Hilton Head Island visitors who are looking for water views and lots of beach time may prefer to shop around for other hotels, resorts, rental properties, or an Airbnb Hilton Head that is closer to the ocean. (That should actually be spelled Airbnb Hilton Head not all lower case as in the order.)
