Churros in Mexico City

I finally got to try churros in Mexico City. If you don’t know what they are, they’re basically Latin America’s version of donuts. Except they’re horizontal instead of round. The last time I had them was when I was visiting Medellin – and they were of course delicious.

It’s a popular Mexican food that’s definitely worth the try. Plus, there’s a very familiar flavor to it for those who don’t want to venture too far out of their normal gastronomy.

This past Saturday I decided to go for round two at one of the most well-known churro places in Mexico City and try more churros. The churros here are delicious and definitely lived up to the hype. I got the cinnamon sugar churros and they were perfect.

Churros El Mora

The location I visited was at Parque Mexico. It makes up part of a very busy intersection in the eclectic Condesa neighborhood. The shop is called Churrería El Moro and has been around since the 1930s.

Churrería El Moro has a story of a man coming from Spain and realizing there were no churros in Mexico City. So he started making and selling them out of a pushcart. A few years later, he opened up the shop that’s still there today.

A few ingredients are used for the churro itself. Salt, flour and water are mixed together and then the dough is fried. The result is a crispy outside with a fluffy inside- similar to a donut. It is then rolled in sugar and cinnamon giving it a delicious taste and texture. The churros are also served with chocolate or dulce de leche on the side for dipping. Because no eggs are used, it could technically be a vegan-friendly option for those looking to eat vegan in Mexico City.

(The weather was nice today. So I decided to sip my hot chocolate outside and munching on these churros.)

On the other hand, the churro ice cream sandwich would not be vegan. This sandwich is made with two pieces of churro with ice cream in the middle. The ice cream choices include vanilla, chocolate, dulce de leche or coconut. It is then rolled in more cinnamon and sugar giving it an even sweeter flavor. It is called consuelo which means comfort in Spanish. In English, we call it part of a category of foods called comfort food.

There are 9 stores for Churrería El Moro spread throughout Mexico City. The one I went to was the original store in Parque Mexico. They are all open 24 hours so you can go anytime day or night. However, they do say that the churros are best after midnight.

If you’re looking for something seasonal, they also have a winter menu with items such as churros with hot chocolate. The consuelo is only available in the summer.

I had mine with hot chocolate. You can also dip the churros in the hot chocolate. But I took my normal route and drank it separately. It was thick and creamy and tasted amazing. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I will definitely be back for more churros in the future.

There are other places to buy churros in Mexico City, but this is by far the most popular place. So if you’re looking for a good churro, this is the place to go.

The History of Churros

The history of churros is a bit disputed. But it is believed that they originated in Spain and Portugal. One theory is that they were created by shepherds who needed an easy and portable food to take with them when they were out in the field.

Another theory is that they were created by monks in the Spanish mountains. The story goes that the monks were not allowed to eat meat. So they created a fried dough that was similar to the shape of a finger. They called it a churro.

Whatever the true story is, we do know that churros have been around for centuries. And they are now enjoyed all over the world.
